Kids in the East Craigs area of Edinburgh were delighted when Hearts star Laryea Kingston joined in their game of Street Football.

The children were enjoying their first taste of the portable football pitch when the Ghana international dropped in for a kick-about.

The pitch was purchased by Lothian and Borders Police, with financial assistance from the City of Edinburgh Council's Local Initiative Fund and Community Scotland and is aimed at keeping youngsters in the west of the Capital out of trouble.

"We are trying to divert the kids away from anything which might bring them into conflict with local residents," said Community Beat Officer Jeff Whelan. "And there is also the health benefits as well which come with a more active lifestyle.

"Judging by their response when we launched it at East Craigs, it is going to be very popular. It's a portable pitch which can be put up in just half-an-hour and we can take it anywhere.

"It was great that Laryea Kingston was able to participate and I'd like to thank Hearts for their support. It made the day all the more special for the youngsters."

Laryea thoroughly enjoyed himself as well and gave a big thumbs-up to the initiative.

"I grew up playing football on the streets of Accra in Ghana so I'm all for anything like this that helps the young children," said the Tynecastle star.

"It helps them focus their energies on the football and you never know, in time it might help produce some good players who may be able to go on and achieve something in the game."

Jeff is currently looking for more volunteers to help with the scheme and any local residents wanting more information can contact him at Corstorphine Police Station on 0131 334 4900.
