We must win - nothing else
Stephen Frail today made one thing absolutely clear: nothing other than victory over Gretna will suffice, tonight.
The Jambos wrap up the season with a low key visit to face the bottom placed club at Fir Park this evening (kick-off 7.45pm), with the Borders' outfit's future on the line.
Hearts' own season has been lamentable, and whilst a win in Motherwell this evening is unlikely to make anyone feel better about the last ten months, it is the minimum that can be expected.
And Stephen desperately hopes that the match, two years to the day since Hearts defeat Gretna in the Scottish Cup Final on penalties, will not be their final match.
"We have to win, there is no two ways about it," the interim boss said. "Anything short of a victory will be as bad as anything.
"You are sad to see any club go out of business. You look at the fairytale they had progressing through the leagues in the way they did and taking us to a penalty shoot out before we won the Scottish Cup.
"Hopefully it won't happen and hopefully things can be sorted out there and they can continue to be a Scottish Football League game."
Meanwhile, Stephen admitted he is not looking upon this game as any different to any other match.
When asked if he thought the trip to Gretna might be his final match at Tynecastle he was pragmatic, and turned back to an approach which stood him well during a fine career, that was sometimes blighted by injury.
"I treat every game as my last game," he said. "I did it as a player because you don't know what is around the corner in terms of injury.
"I think that if you did that then you would make sure that every game you are part of you give your all because you think you might never do it again. I tried to play like that, but as I say on this side I think like that."
Access to tonight's game is via cash-only turnstiles, with tickets priced at £15 for adults, £5 for concessions and £1 for U16s.
