Hearts World - 2pm

Right, so we beat the team at the top of the league one week. Convincingly so. Then, after an excellent first half today, we lose to the team propping up the league, who had no points before 3pm. So, so typical of Hearts. But no doubt we'll keep coming back for more of the same.

The story was written when Craig Brewster came on with five minutes left and he didn't disappoint, with a thunderous winner deep into stoppage time, to compliment Wyness's leveller. Ian Black's own goal, following fine work from Wallace and Driver, had given the Jambos a first half lead.

Regardless of whatever else happened, the wind was going to be a talking point. Bluntly, it was brutal - for us sitting in the press box at least, so in the open area of the pitch, we pitied the 22 poor souls who were getting no protection.

A first foray from Hearts was easily repelled when Fraser caught Ivaskevicius's searching high cross. At least 'number 28' was on target though, which was more than Don Cowie managed when he lashed wildly at a long corner - his drive cleared the stadium.

Christophe Berra beats Grant Munro to the header

Caley hadn't exactly begun like a team possessed, but there was a quiet determination about their play. The aforementioned Cowie was proving a wee thorn in the Hearts defence, as he beat the offside trap, only to get caught under the ball and allow Tall to harry him away from danger.

The absence of Christian Nade, so impressive on his home debut against Rangers, was being sorely noticed. Velicka has contributed greatly since his arrival from Kaunas, but looked to be carrying a slight injury as he led the line up front. There was evidence of neat play from both sides, particularly with Ivaskevicius getting involved with some skillful touches. Despite this, Ross Tokely had the best chance so far on 13 minutes when he directed a free header wide of Banks's goal.

Hearts were doing well to get into the wide areas, keeping the ball on the ground as they did so. The problem came with deliveries into the box, Andy Driver being a case in point as we wrote these very words, angling his cross right into the grateful arms of Fraser.

Banks had to be in the right position to grasp Cowie's firm effort, in the 24th minute. It was safe to say that, in comparison with the many other 0-0 draws we've seen here, this was a little bit more exciting, because there were actually some chances. Not clear cut ones mind, but the play was relatively open.

Celebrations after the Hearts goal - oh how things changed

Good work from Driver won a corner, from which Tokely cleared for a throw-in. Much of the game was taking place in the Caley half as we appraoched the half hour mark.  Needless to say, the home team then produced two scares for us in the space of ten seconds, Tokely's header causing havoc in the sixs yard box and then Wyness looping a volley straight at Banks.

The Jambos began to look dangerous...moments after Ivaskevicius had what looked like a goalbound shot deflected wide, we took the lead. Some brilliant link-up play between young guns Wallace and Driver released the left-back with a clear run at goal. In a burst reminiscent of his great goal at Rugby Park in February 2005, Wallace looked set to the pull the trigger. He was tackled superbly, but Driver collected the ball out wide and fired a ball across goal that deflected off Ian Black. The Edinburgh-born lad could only look on in horror as that ricochet beat Fraser and nestled in the middle of the net.

Moments later Ksanavicius broke from the same position but dallied too long and his strike was parried away. Ross Tokely, such a solid figure for Caley in recent seasons, was suffering a torrid time down his right flank, as that was where all the opportunities were coming from.

Barry Wilson, moments after he was booked, wasted a glorious chance to level when his twisting and turning in the box found only Kingston, to the frustration of the home fans. Then a header across goal found Wyness waiting to tap in but Tall intervened, yet again.

Wyness celebrates the equaliser

Two substitutions were made by the management team at half-time, Driver and Velicka being withdrawn for Stewart and Elliot. It did not prevent a slack opening from the hosts, as Inverness sought to assert themselves. They had clearly been buoyed by a half-time pep talk from Craig Brewster.

Elliot did brilliantly to outfox several defenders in the penalty area and was so so close to teeing up Ivaskevicius for a simple tap in. Great work from Phil McGuire prevented this. Kingston then broke down the same flank, sensing the space, but his hard low cross was cleared.

Wyness then headed wide from seven yards out, following good work from Niculae, in a scenario that would have had the ex-Hearts man kicking himself. It seemed to spur Caley on, the fact they had made some space for themselves, as they sought to exploit a slack pass from Lee Wallace (they didn't, thankfully).

Hearts were all over the shop when Tokely dispossessed a pass-out. He evaded several challenges before teeing up Wyness. Twelve yards out, just Banks to beat, we expected the equaliser. Somehow, most probably due to a block from Berra, the ball trickled away from the goalmouth.

Ibrahim Tall makes the challenge

Caley equalised, slightly fortunately but probably deservedly, on 63 minutes. Tokely again found himself behind the defence and picked out Wilson with a delicate chipped ball. Wilson's volley was brilliantly saved by Banks, but the keeper only succeeded in pushing the ball up in the air. On another day it might have landed on the roof of the net. Today, it fell to the feet of Wyness, lurking practically on the line, and it was 1-1.

Ksnavicius, who had fallen out of the game in this period - although not as noticeably as Ivaskevicius had - made way for Pospisil, who tested Fraser with his very first touch.

Referee Mr Tumilty incensed the Hearts support by allowing Berra to maraud up the pitch, lung-burstingly down the pitch, before pulling him back to attend to a Caley head knock. Caley then refused to give the ball back from the drop-ball, forcing a competitive situation, and then winning a free-kick. The boos from the away end summed up what many felt to be a lack of sportsmanlike behaviour.

The winner

Pospisil's control let him down on 75 minutes, when Elliot fed him after a fine run. Had the Czech displayed better control, his team might have regained the lead. A composed first half performance had given way to a wee bit of a mess, if we were being truthful.

Kingston totally wrong-footed Fraser with a magnificent free-kick, practically a pass, that crashed off the post. On another day (where have we heard that before?) it would have rolled over the line. Instead, it re-entered play and was cleared.

Either side could win it. The Caley player manager entered the fray in the 85th minute, with a view to winning the match. He did, as Lee Wallace failed to pick up on a ball and eventually, following initial good work from Robbie Neilson in distracting Alan Morgan, the substitute's cross found Brewster who smacked a superb volley home, with 92 minutes on the clock.
