Background to Streetwork

Streetwork UK was established in 1992 to work with young people at risk on the streets helping them to make better choices, and avoid the damaging effects of homelessness, drugs, alcohol, gang violence, unprotected sex, prostitution and crime.

This service was expanded in 1997 to work with people of all ages who are sleeping rough or at risk of sleeping rough.

Today, Streetwork operates in the city centre every night and most day times of the year.

Streetwork looks for the most vulnerable and give them crisis support, making sure they are safe and helping them to access emergency accommodation.

In the housing estates, Streetwork educates young people to help them stay off drugs, away from crime, and to make better choices about sexual health.

These young people often face a range of problems and may have been excluded from school, endured long-term unemployment, faced homelessness or become involved in criminal activity. Many are without the support of their family and on the margins of their local community.

Streetwork guides every individual towards a better life, education, training and job opportunities.
